BREGJE TERMEER

I am a visual anthropologist with a professional background in photography (KABK). I conducted a PhD research at the University of Amsterdam, into artistic strategies by young Muslim artists in the Netherlands. The relation between art and society fascinates me; in particular I am interested in the role that photography can play in social change.

In my research projects I value images not merely as end products that stand alone, but am interested foremostly in how images, and the process of making images, can serve as a means to discover new insights or new knowledge. I am inspired by the role ‘not-knowing’ plays in the process of image creation, and am eternally curious about the relationship between material culture and identity.

As a an independent researcher I have many years of experience in conducting research into, and giving advice on, cultural diversity in the arts and in higher art education.
